Q1
I have purchased the test, how should I store the test until I am ready to use it?
A
The test should be stored at room temperature, away from heat, light and volatile chemicals (e.g., chlorine, iodine, ammonia, ozone) until you are ready to apply your samples. The completed test cards MUST be returned to our laboratory for testing at least 14 days before the test card expiry date.
Q2
Do I need any preparation before starting the test?
A
Prepare to carry out the test three days before the first
stool sample will be taken and continue through the test period with dietary and medication restrictions.
Q3
What dietary/medication restrictions should I follow?
A
Eat a high fibre diet including wholemeal bread, wheatbran or nuts. This increases stool volume and helps to avoid constipation during the test period. Avoid Vitamin C intake of more than 250mg a day. You can eat fruit and vegetables but don`t take Vitamin C supplements. The balanced sensitivity of Hemoccult
® is such that no dietary restrictions are required before or during the test period, although black pudding should be avoided. Avoid drugs which may cause intestinal bleeding, e. g. aspirin, ibuprofen, indomethacin, naproxen.
Please see your doctor for advice before altering any prescribed medication. Avoid the application of antiseptic preparations containing iodine to the anal area.
Q4
I opened the test, but am not ready to take the test; will my opening it invalidate that test
A
No, close the test card and keep it stored properly (at room temperature, away from heat, light and volatile chemicals) until ready to use.
Q5
If I have more than one bowel movement per day, can I take samples for the other test sections?
A
We recommend sampling from only one
bowel movement per day. The 3-day collection method is used to minimise the risk of not detecting hidden blood in your motion.
Q6
I may not have a bowel movement for 3 consecutive days; can I miss a day or two between samples?
A
Yes - so long as your completed test card is returned to Point Of Care Testing within the recommended 10 days from application of the first sample.
Q7
What if I am unable to complete and return the test card within 10 days of application of the first sample?
A
We will be unable to provide a complete set of valid results from your samples. Only samples sent to the laboratory, within the 10 day period will be valid.
Q8
How do I collect the samples?
A
Samples may be collected onto a pad of folded toilet paper but it is important that the sample you use on the test card has not fallen into the toilet water as this could affect the results. You may also take a clean cardboard plate or a chamber pot. Alternatively you may use
one folded page of a newspaper to cover the water surface.
Q9
Where do I return my completed test card?
A
Please return your completed test card to Point of Care Testing Ltd, Unit 5 Arbroath Business Centre, Dens Road, Arbroath, DD11 1RS. 1 Foil Freepost return envelope is included in your kit. It is important you use this envelope as it has been specially designed to meet postal regulations.
Q10
I have lost my return envelope how should I return my completed test card?
A
Contact POCT Ltd immediately and arrangements will be made to send you another return envelope.
Q11
When can I expect results from my test?
A
You will receive results within 10 working days.
Q12
Is there any circumstances under which I should not perform the test?
A
No samples should be collected if blood is visible in the stool (e.g. menstruation, active haemorrhoids)
