Q1
I have had a positive result from POCT Ltd, what does this mean?
A
A positive result from a
faecal occult blood test does not necessarily mean that you have
bowel cancer. However, the presence of occult (hidden) blood in your stool samples does require further investigation. A positive result may also alert you to other conditions in the bowel which are not cancerous but which may still require treatment and/or further investigation.
Q2
I have had a positive result from POCT Ltd, what should I do now?
A
Make an immediate appointment with your GP and take your POCT Ltd results letter with you. The cause of bleeding needs investigating.
Q3
I have had a positive result from POCT Ltd, what treatment should I expect from my GP?
A
Your GP will wish to discuss your particular situation, and may make arrangements for further investigations to be carried out. This could include a
colonoscopy to examine your
bowel.
Q4
I have had a negative result from POCT Ltd, what does this mean?
A
A negative result shows that occult (hidden) blood was not detected in your
stool samples. No screening test is 100% sensitive as cancers and other problems in the
bowel can bleed intermittently and blood is not always distributed evenly in the stool.
Q5
If I am found to have bowel cancer what happens next?
A
Your doctor should make appropriate arrangements for the treatment of this disease.
Q6
I have had a negative result from POCT Ltd, but I am still concerned, what should I do?
A
Should you have any concerns visit your GP immediately.
Q7
How often should I take the test?
A
It is recommended that you take the test annually. If you have previously completed a Hemoccult
® test we will automatically send you a reminder when your next test is due.
