Radiotherapy
The treatment of cancer or other disease using X-rays or similar radiation. During radiotherapy, a significant amount of healthy normal tissue is sometimes irradiated. To reduce the side effects caused by this, the radiation dose is often split into a number of treatments, enabling the normal healthy tissue to recover before the next treatment is given.
Rectum
The last 6 to 8 inches of the large intestine. The rectum stores solid waste until it leaves the body.
Recurrence
The return of a sign, symptom or disease after a remission.
Remission
The period of time between when the all clear is given after treatment and when a person is declared cancer free.
Risk factor
Something about us or our lives that increases our chances of something bad happening to us. For example, smoking is a 'risk factor' for many cancers.
